Hurricane Delta weakened to a Category 2 storm as it made landfall along Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Wednesday morning but is still expected to cause "life-threatening" storm surge and "catastrophic" wind damage as it roars across the tourist hotspot of Cancun.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the storm made landfall along the coast of northeastern Mexico near Puerto Morelos, around 5:30 a.m. EDT about 20 miles south of Cancun. The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 100 mph as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico.

There is also an increased likelihood of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds when the storm reaches the coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi. The storm is projected to make landfall in the U.S. on Friday.
