A fire chief says four people have been injured in a partial building collapse in northern Kentucky.

Covington Fire Chief Dan Mathew told The Kentucky Enquirer that a sign and several bricks fell Thursday morning from the top of the building. He said the bricks buried one victim. That person and three others were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

Mathew said the adult victims were chaperoning a group of middle school students on a field trip. Mathew and Covington City Manager Larry Klein said no students were injured, but they witnessed the incident.

The fire chief says work was being done on the building's roof, but he doesn't know if that contributed.

Engineers will inspect the building to determine if it is structurally sound.
