Sheriff: Suspect in Las Vegas car rampage was high on drugs
The incident on the Vegas strip left one person dead, 37 injured
Lakeisha Holloway was officially charged on Tuesday afternoon in the rampage that left one dead and at least 35 injured when a car repeatedly rammed pedestrians on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday night.
The Clark County District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release that it had charged Holloway with one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon, one count of child abuse, neglect or endangerment and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.
DA Steve Wolfson said during a Monday news conference that the death penalty was a “consideration.” The charge of leaving the scene of an accident is non-probational and is punishable by up to 20 years in prison under a new law that went into effect just two months ago.
Holloway is set to make her first court appearance at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
She could still face more charges in the future, including several counts of attempted murder.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Wolfson said in the press release. “This is a horrendous and inexcusable act that has needlessly and tragically impacted countless lives. I am confident that, as the investigation unfolds, we will be filing many more charges against Ms. Holloway.”
Police say Holloway, 24, repeatedly drove her car into people lining the busy Las Vegas Boulevard. Her 3-year-old daughter is alleged to have been in the backseat during the carnage. Officials said Holloway drove onto the sidewalk to ram people at least two times before driving a short distance, parking her vehicle and asking a casino valet to call the cops.
Police officers who responded and initially detained Holloway described her as “stoic.”
No motive has been released yet.
