Britain’s Metropolitan Police will become involved with the search for Madeleine McCann, the 3-year-old who disappeared in Portugal in 2007, the U.K.’s Home Department announced Thursday.
The move came after the girl’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, pleaded to the government for help, saying officials had offered “words, but no action,” Sky News reports.
"They want to look at what has come in since 2008; Kate and Gerry want the authorities in both countries to work together to resolve this,” McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell told Sky News.
The couple wrote a letter to the prime minister earlier calling for a joint U.K.-Portugal review of the case.
Madeleine disappeared in May 2007 during a family vacation in Algarve, Portugal. She was left unattended with her two 2-year-old siblings in an apartment as her parents ate at a nearby restaurant.
