The American Worker: At 101, Lawyer Is America's Outstanding Oldest Worker

WEATHERFORD, Texas – Lawyer Jack Borden is 101 years old and still works 40 hours a week.

"I get down here about 6:30, I usually go home about 11 and I eat lunch and then my doctor said you need to take a nap everyday," says Borden.

That same doctor wanted Borden to stop practicing law, but he refused. Today, he is the oldest practicing member of the Texas State Bar.

But colleague and Parker County Judge Mark Riley says his age is not a factor. "Mr. Borden is one of the sharpest, most astute attorneys that walks into the courtroom."

Nearly everyone in Weatherford, Tx knows Borden.

"He is a fine, Christian man. He's active in the community, he is honest, caring, loving-and, has the best stories." says Parker County clerk Jeane Brunson.

Now Borden has another story to share. Experience Works - the nation's largest provider of training and employment services for older workers - recognized the attorney with this year's oldest worker award.

"Highlighting older workers breaks down barriers and negative myths and stereotypes about older people. And there can be no better example of a role model for all of us than Jack Borden," says president and CEO of Experience Works.

For the time being, Borden has no plans of stopping.

"I am a firm believer that the good Lord is leaving me here for a reason."

Despite hearing the same nagging question: when are you going to retire.

"I say well, when someday one of the girls comes in this office and my head is down on this desk - and they can't wake me up, that's when I'll retire."
