Not Welcome
President Bush has visited every state except Vermont during his time in office. Now some folks in Brattleboro, Vermont say if he ever does show up, he should be arrested.
A group is petitioning to put an item on the town meeting agenda in March calling for the president and vice president to be arrested and indicted for war crimes if they ever come to the community. Supporters need about 1,000 signatures to get the item on the agenda.
One member of the town select board says leaders need to focus instead on the needs of the citizens and the idea is not practical. Democratic Attorney General William Sorrell — whose office has repeatedly sued the Bush administration over environmental issues — calls the move, "of very dubious legality."
Name Calling
Speaking of the environment, a French physicist and noted global warming skeptic is calling Al Gore a "crook."
Claude Allegre is a former education minister and the author of a new book called "My Truth About the Planet." Bloomberg.com reports, Allegre accuses Gore of presiding over an eco-business that "pumps out cash."
He says Gore's followers are like religious zealots who are actually endangering the planet. Allegre contends environmentalists are driven by a Judeo-Christian guilt complex that leads them to paint worst-case scenarios and attribute little-understood natural cycles to human misbehavior.
Speak No Evil
For former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, her policy of not talking to reporters has absolutely no exceptions — even for children.
27-year-old Chelsea was recently approached by 9-year-old Iowa fourth-grader Sydney Rieckhoff, who serves as a "kid reporter" for the children's news service called Scholastic News. But when the girl asked Chelsea Clinton a question, she got the same brush-off that any adult reporter would have received. Said Chelsea, "I'm sorry, I don't talk to the press and that applies to you, unfortunately. Even though I think you're cute."
Despite the slight, the young reporter's mom says she will still caucus for Chelsea's mom, Senator Hillary Clinton.
Failing to See the Humor
Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich are upset with Pizza Hut over its new commercial featuring Kucinich and other candidates in quick, out-of-context sound bites.
The promotion for the restaurant's new $5 pizzas has an announcer asking, "Are people seeing lower prices now?" It then cuts to a clip of Kucinich from a Democratic debate saying, "More people in this country have seen UFOs."
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports Kucinich-backers are asking for an apology and trying to mount a boycott against Pizza Hut, calling the ad a low blow to a viable, electable candidate.
Kucinich's camp objects to the UFO reference, not to the association with pepperoni-covered pizzas, despite the congressman's aversion to meat — he's a vegan.
A Pizza Hut spokeswoman calls the ad, "a lighthearted way to tie into an important topic of the economy."
