ELIZABETH, N.J. – One of New Jersey's largest synagogues (search) was temporarily closed and placed under police guard after a threat was made against it, authorities said.
The threat against Temple Emanu-El in Westfield was deemed not credible late Wednesday, the Union County prosecutor said Friday, but police and road barriers remained as a precaution.
Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow did not disclose the nature of the threat but said it did not involve a bomb. He said the threat was timed to the New Year's holiday period.
Investigators were still trying to determine the source of the threat, which was directed at the temple and not a person, Romankow said.
Rabbi Douglas B. Sagal said Friday that no decision had yet been made on whether to resume services Friday night at the 53-year-old temple, which served about 1,100 families.
Members were invited to attend services at a nearby synagogue.
Westfield is about 25 miles southwest of New York City.
