‘Por Ellos, Si Podemos’ photo campaign celebrates Hispanic heroes

Eva Longoria, Carlos Slim, Marc Anthony, Roberto Clemente and Sonia Sotomayor are among the heroes celebrated in the campaign "Por Ellos, Si Podemos."

Halloween shops are filled with costumes of superheroes, Disney princesses, witches, goblins and pumpkins.

And while they are all popular items for trick-or-treating, a New York photographer says there is more to Halloween than Spiderman, the creatures from Minecraft and Elsa from “Frozen.”

Last year, Eunique Jones-Gibson launched the “Because of Them, We Can” campaign where she photographed children dressed up as heroes of the African-American community.

For Hispanic Heritage Month this year, she launched a Latino version of the campaign, “Por Ellos, Sí Podemos,” and she hopes parents will use it as an inspiration for Halloween costumes.

“There are other superheroes that fit the bill,” Jones-Gibson told Fox News Latino.

The campaign has photographed more than 30 Latino personalities in sports, entertainment, politics and more – all with the purpose of giving Latinos tangible superheroes they could strive to be.

Little Eva Longoria, Celia Cruz, Carlos Slim, Marc Anthony, Soledad O’Brien, Roberto Clemente and Oscar de la Renta were photographed.

“The parents were so excited,” said Jones-Gibson, adding that it was impactful for the children who dressed up. “The little Soledad O’Brien really took to it – as a new persona. That can be very powerful.”

She said they always planned on expanding the initial campaign for the Latino community and with the help of American Family Insurance, they were able to do so. There are still some personalities that are missing – like Spanish-language TV host Cristina Saralegui – and they will be working on those down the line, Jones-Gibson said.

But the goal right now is getting parents and children talking about these “heroes” that have broken down barriers in all aspects of society.

“This is making history hip,” Jones-Gibson said, “not old or dated.”
