Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Thaddeus Young had 25 points and nine rebounds to help the Philadelphia 76ers snap a 13-game road losing streak with a 111-104 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Evan Turner contributed 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Spencer Hawes netted 19 points with eight rebounds for Philadelphia, which hadn't won on the road since Nov. 1 in Washington. That was the Sixers' first road game of the season.
Michael Carter-Williams added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists in the win.
"Wins from time to time help validate the time that everyone's put in," Sixers coach Brett Brown said of his players. "I'm happy for them. I think they deserve it."
Nick Young led all scorers with 26 points on 6-of-21 shooting from the field, including just 2-of-11 from deep for LA. He did, however, shoot a perfect 12- for-12 from the foul line.
Jordan Hill and Shawne Williams each recorded double-doubles in defeat with Hill registering 18 points and 13 rebounds and Williams scoring 11 with 10 boards.
The Lakers are in the midst of a season-high five game losing streak.
"We have to start playing bettter and get some wins." said Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni. "We have to battle. The biggest thing is keeping our guys' spirits up."
Jodie Meeks, who finished with 15 points, converted a three-point play early in the third to put LA up 62-60 when the Sixers went on a 12-2 surge that Carter-Williams started with a slam and Hawes capped with a 3.
Philadelphia led by as many 13 in the frame following a 3 from James Anderson and the visitors brought an 86-77 advantage into the fourth.
The Sixers led 90-80 when the Lakers locked all windows and doors, using a 17-4 run to take their first lead since Meeks' three-point conversion in the previous frame. Robert Sacre made a three-point play of his own with 7:07 to play which gave the Lakers a slim 95-94 advantage and Nick Young capped the spurt with a fadeaway jumper in the lane.
Carter-Williams and Hawes proceeded to knock down shots to reclaim the lead for Philadelphia with 4 1/2 minutes left in the contest.
Those buckets were part of a swift 6-0 run after Turner added a pair at the line for a 100-97 lead.
The margin remained three when Thaddeus Young slashed through the lane, receiving a pass from Carter-Williams, and finished with a layup to make it 104-99 with just under two minutes left.
Hill answered with a layup at the other end, but Thaddeus Young made an acrobatic three-point play to push the advantage to six.
Meeks bumped Thaddeus Young as he was falling backward when the Sixers swingman tossed the ball up to the hoop and in.
Jordan Farmar made a trey with 55.2 seconds left, but the Lakers couldn't get any closer as Shawne Williams' game-tying attempt was long and Turner wrangled in the rebound, knocking down two at the line with 13.2 seconds left.
Turner made an emphatic reverse slam to close the scoring and give the Sixers back-to-back wins at Staples Center for the first time since 1984.
"We played team basketball," said Thaddeus Young. "We brought a lot of energy over the last part of the game."
The Lakers led 22-20 after one quarter and the game was tied at 52 at the halfway point.
Game Notes
Xavier Henry left the game in the first quarter with what the team is calling a strained knee. An MRI is scheduled for Monday ... The Lakers had 22 turnovers compared to just 11 for Philadelphia ... Each team had trouble shooting with the Sixers going 35-of-95 (41.1 percent) from the field and the Lakers shooting a bitter 31-for-84 (36.9 percent) ... The Sixers outscored the Lakers 52-28 in the paint.
