Police say gunmen kill newly elected provincial lawmaker in volatile northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Pakistani police say attackers have shot and killed a newly elected provincial lawmaker in the northwestern town of Hangu.

Senior police officer Bin Yamin Khan said Farid Khan's vehicle was came under fire Monday as he was returning from a meeting in Pakistan's volatile northwest, where Taliban militants have a strong presence. Another person in the vehicle was killed, and one was wounded.

The police officer said Khan was elected as an independent member of the assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the May 11 elections, then joined the party of cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan.

There was no claim of responsibility, and the officer would not speculate about who was responsible. Taliban militants carried out several attacks during the run-up to the elections, terming democracy as the system of evil.
