Philly schools begin rehiring after city pledges $50M, but some parents say it's not enough

PHILADELPHIA – The nearly broke Philadelphia schools will open on schedule next month thanks to an emergency infusion of $50 million.

But will they be worth going to?

That's the question parents are asking as the district begins to rehire about 1,000 pink-slipped workers, from assistant principals to guidance counselors.

City officials promised $50 million in aid to the struggling system on Thursday. Superintendent William Hite (HEIGHT) had threatened to delay the Sept. 9 start of school if he didn't have the money by Friday.

Hite says that's the bare minimum needed to ensure schools are staffed sufficiently.

Yet parents worry the buildings will simply be shells, without enough resources to offer students a safe and adequate learning environment. About 2,500 employees remain laid off.
