A number of U.S. Olympians finished atop the podium at the 2013 adidas Grand Prix, held May 25 in New York. Tyson Gay (Lexington, Ky.) won the 100-meter in 10.02 seconds. In just two attempts, 2012 Olympic pole vault champion Jenn Suhr cleared 4.63 meters to win the event. Against stiff competition, Janay DeLoach Soukup (Fort Collins, Colo.) set a meet record and won the long jump with a distance of 6.79 meters. In other events, Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, Pa.) led a U.S. sweep over the top four spots in the men's shot put and Michael Tinsley (Little Rock, Ark.) won the 400 hurdles.
GIBB, PATERSON CAPTURE SECOND STRAIGHT MEDAL ON FIVB WORLD TOUR
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) captured the silver medal at the Corrientes Grand Slam, held May 22-26 in Corrientes, Argentina. It was the second straight medal for the pair on the FIVB World Tour. The seventh-seeded duo topped third-seeded Paolo Nicolai and Daniel Lupo of Italy, 21-19, 20-22, 15-17, in the semifinals before losing to Latvia's Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins, 21-16, 21-19. In the women's tournament, Olympic silver medalists April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) placed fourth.
BADMINTON
After six days of competition, the U.S. Mixed National Badminton Team defeated Austria, 3-0, at the Sudirman Cup, held May 19-26 in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Despite winning its fourth competition, Team USA did not advance to the semifinals.
CYCLING
Jade Wilcoxson (Talent, Ore.) and Freddie Rodriguez (Berkeley, Calif.) emerged victorious at the Volkswagen USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships, held May 25-27 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Wilcoxon crossed the finish line in 2:46:39 to win the women's road race, while Rodriguez used a final surge to edge Brent Bookwalter (Asheville, N.C.) for the win with a time of 4:06:56.
DIVING
The 2013 World Championship Team was announced following the conclusion of the World Championship Trials, held May 15-20 in Tallahassee, Fla. The 15-member team includes 2012 Olympic medalists David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.) and Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.). The women's roster includes Cheyenne Cousineau (Temperance, Mich.) earned the women's synchronized 10-meter berth along with Maren Taylor (Arlington, Va.). The team will represent the U.S. on July 20-28 in Barcelona, Spain.
FENCING
London 2012 Olympian Nzingha Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the gold medal at the Foil Grand Prix, held May 24-25 in Marseille, France. Her victory marks the first time a U.S. woman foil fencer has ever earned a Grand Prix title. Fellow 2012 Olympian Lee Kiefer (Lexington, Ky.) finished sixth.
In her last Grand Prix event of the season, two-time Olympic champion Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) placed fifth at the Saber Grand Prix, held May 25 in Tianjin, China. Meanwhile, Ibtihaj Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J) took ninth, Daria Schneider (New York City, N.Y.) placed 10th and Monica Aksamit (Matawan, N.J.) placed 14th.
Samuel Freiman (Spring, Texas) was the top American finisher, placing 31st at the Epee World Cup, held May 24-25 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Meanwhile, Jonathan Yergler (Princeton, N.J.) and Jason Pryor (Colorado Springs, Colo.) qualified for the U.S. men's epee team that will compete at the senior world championships in August and the Pan American Championships in June.
London Olympian Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won the gold medal at the Havana Foil World Cup, held May 23-27 in Havana, Cuab. It was the first World Cup title for an individual U.S. men's foil fencer since 1999. Gerek Meinhardt (San Francisco, Calif.) finished ninth.
FIELD HOCKEY
The top field hockey athletes in the country took the field for the 2013 Women's National Championship, held May 23-29 in Norfolk, Va. The week-long selection tournament will determine the 2013-14 U.S. Women's National Field Hockey Team. Olympian Katie O'Donnell currently leads all scorers with four goals in three games.
RUGBY
The U.S. men's rugby sevens team lost to Canada, 16-9, in the Pacific Nations Cup opener on May 25 in Edmonton, Alberta.
SAILING
Anne Haeger (East Troy, Wis.) and Briana Provancha (San Diego, Calif.) took home the silver medal in the women's 470 at the Delta Lloyd Regatta, held May 21-15 in Medemblik, Netherlands. The pair remained in close contention with New Zealand's Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie, crossing the finish line six seconds behind the 2012 Olympic champions.
SHOOTING
Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) finished seventh in the 50-meter pistol event at the ISSF World Cup, held May 25-29 in Munich. It was his first 50-meter pistol final. He continues competition today in the 10-meter air pistol event. Kelsey Emme (Rapid City, S.D.) also had a breakout performance in Women's 10m Air Rifle She was just 1.2 points away from making the finals.
TENNIS
Olympic champion Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the 2013 French Open after defeating Anna Tatishvili of Georgia, 6-0, 6-1, on May 26 in Paris. Currently ranked No. 1 in the world, Williams is looking to capture her 16th career Grand Slam title. Mallory Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) and Shelby Rogers (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) also posted wins in opening-round action. The trio is among 15 U.S. women - the most of any country - in this year's event, which continues through June 9. Burdette defeated Croatia's Donna Vekic, 6-3, 6-4, while Rogers topped Irena Pavlovic of France, 6-3, 6-4.
In men's singles competition, John Isner (Greensboro, N.C.) and Ryan Harrison (Shreveport, La.) advanced past the first round of the 2013 French Open to set up a second-round encounter, scheduled for May 29. Isner took a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win over Argentina's Carlos Berlocq, while Harrison bested Russian Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
WATER POLO
The U.S. Women's Senior National Water Polo Team continued its winning streak from the 2012 Olympic Games, defeating Brazil, 11-1, to claim first place at the FINA World League Prelims, held May 24-27 in Los Alamitos, Calif.KK Clark (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored a game-high four goals as Tumua Anae (Newport Beach, Calif.) went the distance in goal to pick up the victory.
The U.S. Men's Senior National Water Polo Team defeated Brazil, 13-7, to take first place at the FINA World League Prelims on May 27 in Los Alamitos, Calif. Brandon Johnson (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the U.S. with three goals en route to the victory.
WRESTLING
Katherine Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) clinched the bronze in the 55 kg. division at the German Grand Prix, held May 19-20 in Dormagen, Germany. She defeated Eva Sauer of Germany, 3-1.
Aaron Pico (Whittier, Calif.) won every bout at 63 kg. by technical fall to earn Outstanding Wrestler honors at the FILA Cadet National Championships, held May 25-26 in Akron, Ohio. Devin Brown (Saegertown, Pa.) and Spencer Lee (Saegertown, Pa) also won titles at 46 kg. and 50 kg. The champions qualified to represent the U.S. at the Cadet World Championships.
