Kristin Chenoweth, actress, singer and Broadway star is the ultimate go getter. In her newest film, “Hard Sell,” Chenoweth plays a struggling mother, which is a departure from the bubbly characters she typically plays.

“The reason I am most attracted to this role and wanted to do it is because I am fascinated with the idea of a son becoming a parent to his mother,” she told FOX411 of the flick that hits theaters on May 20. “This woman has a lot of issues like agoraphobia. She has some addictions. She has some mental health issues. I am also loving getting to walk that line with a little bit of humor but also the real situation. To me it all just felt right.”

Chenoweth, who also starred in the Tony-winning Broadway hit “Wicked,” revealed that through her time with the musical, she learned how to appreciate things in the moment.

“I look back there in that time, and, you know, when you are young you can’t really grasp the moment that you are having. You just know you are having one. You are just on the ride,” she said. “I just went on that ride, and now I look back and think about all the things I learned, about all the things I took with me, and I wanted a show that was like a “[Les Misérables]” or “Phantom.” I wanted to be in a show that people knew.”

Whether Chenoweth, 47, is singing, acting or hitting the Broadway stage, her true love is performing for a live audience.

“I really love a live audience. It’s always going to be who I am,” she said. “I love being in front of people, not necessarily in a role. I love the instant gratification between the artist and the audience. That is my favorite relationship. In my opinion, audience is a character and their role is important. I listen to them, and they tell me what they want. I just love it.”

Besides her new film, she is currently on tour and working on a new album.

“I’m doing it right now. I’m so excited!” she exclaimed. “I’m working on it now, and I have been pretty quiet about what it is. What I am doing is laying down a bunch of music, and then I’m going to decide how it fits together and some might not make the album and some will. I feel lucky I get to be an artist that even makes a record. Right now it’s all about immediate downloads and YouTube, but I’m thankful that my record label, Concord, is helping me do this.

The singer said she is mainly focused on her music these days.

“I am a big listener to the universe, and that’s where I am at right now,” she said. “I am always thinking about what’s next. I am touring and making an album, and all I’m thinking about is music. I just love it.”
