At least four people were shot in two separate incidents outside a Michigan high school, authorities said late Tuesday.

Muskegon Heights interim Police Chief Dr. Joseph Thomas told WXMI-TV authorities believe the incident stems from a fight that occurred in Grand Rapids at some point last week. Thomas said the persons involved in the incident may have wanted to try to “settle the score” at a basketball game at Muskegon High School.

Authorities made sure the proper precautions were set in place prior to the basketball game, according to the Fox affiliate. Michigan State Police and Muskegon County Sheriff’s Department officers were in the area.

"Between the Muskegon Heights Police Department, The Sheriff's Department and the Michigan State Police, we did everything we could to stop this from happening," said Thomas.

WXMI-TV reported one of the two shootings, which happened near each other, involved an officer-involved shooting. The Michigan State Police is investigating. Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler said police know that at least one person was armed and confronted a deputy, which led the shooting.

"This could have been a very tragic situation.  We could have had a lot more injuries, we could have had a lot more issues to deal with if we had not responded in the matter we did," Roesler said.  "The Sheriff's Office will be conducting an internal investigation to review the deputies' actions, but from all the information that I've been given and what others have told me, at this point, it appears the deputy acted within policy and state law."

Thomas said that some of the suspects are in custody, but names of the individuals have not been released.

All four victims involved are being treated at Mercy Health Muskegon’s Hackley hospital, according to MLive.com. The case remains under investigation.
