Authorities say a police officer in southern Alabama is hospitalized after gunfire that also left a suspect wounded.

Mobile Police Department spokesman Terence Perkins tells WPMI-TV (bit.ly/1Rtpcug) the officer was involved in a drug investigation when the shooting happened around 3 a.m. Friday near a truck stop in Grand Bay, Alabama.

Perkins said the officer was shot during a shootout and was in stable condition at the University of South Alabama Medical Center. The suspect's condition wasn't released.

No other details were released early Friday.
