An army spokesman says Islamic extremists have attacked a hotel in central Mali near an army camp in Sevare.

Col. Souleymane Maiga said Friday that the jihadists are exchanging fire with the army at the Hotel Debo, about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Mopti in the country's central region.

A resident in the area said smoke was coming from the hotel now surrounded by soldiers. The resident spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of his safety.

Attacks by extremists on Malian army positions have moved into central and southern Mali this year.

Mali's north fell under the control of Islamic extremists following a military coup in 2012. A French-led military intervention in 2013 scattered the extremists, though the region remains insecure.
